Sue Hoy’s artistic inspiration comes from the beauty of her surroundings. Using oil and acrylic, she strives to bring vibrancy and energy into her painting through colorful and deliberate mark making. With bold strokes, she simplifies her subject down to the essential elements. Having the viewer see the energy of the brush mark or the line of charcoal, invites them into her process.
“When beginning a piece, I try to remember the importance of experimentation and play. By trusting the process I can keep the discovery open and avoid getting too attached to any one area of the painting. I love to create several layers and then sand or scrape paint away, revealing the history and beneath.”
Sue has a BFA in Visual Design. She worked as a graphic designer for many years before moving to painting and teaching. She has been involved in numerous public art projects including murals and painted sculpture. Sue teaches classes for children and adults at the art centers in Milton and Quincy. She lives with her husband and 3 children in Milton, MA.
